About Walmart
Sam Walton, a businessman from Arkansas, began his career on June 3, 1940, in a JC Penney store in Des Moines, Iowa, where he continued to work for 18 months. In 1945 he met Butler Brothers, a regional salesman who owned a number of department stores called Ben Franklin, who offered him one in Newport (Arkansas). Walton ran the store with extreme success. Problems with the negotiations on an extension of the lease forced Walton for opening a new Ben Franklin franchise store in Bentonville (Arkansas). He called this not Ben Franklin store, but “Walton’s Five and Dime.” On July 2, 1962, he opened his first Wal-Mart discount store at 719 Walnut Ave in Rogers (Arkansas). That building is now used as a hardware store and antique shop. Within five years, the company expanded to 24 stores in Arkansas and posted sales of $12.6 million.
