Companion is a new Android and iPhone app that lets you feel safer when you’re alone at night walking home. Others may follow where you are and get emergency message automatically.
Companion walks virtually with you
That way Companion functions as a virtual follower in the dark or when you’re in dangerous neighborhoods. When setting as a user you need to enter your telephone number in the app and a code by SMS to create a companion account. So be sure you do enter your number correctly, otherwise the app will not work. When the account is created, you can directly use the free app.
The interface of the Companion app is very clear. The image is largely occupied by a map of your surroundings. You can add a pin at the location where you are going or manually type an address into the search bar. Then tap ‘Start Trip’ at the bottom of the screen and choose the contacts that virtually walk with you. Your ‘Companions’ can, thanks to the GPS and speedometer in your phone, follow exactly where you are.
Companion keeps a constant eye on whether you are safe and comes into action when there seems to be something wrong. If you start running, fall down, or remove the headset from your smartphone, an alarm sounds. If you then do not let them know you’re okay within 15 seconds via the app, the followers will be warned. With the push of a button, the police can also be called, which immediately gets redirected location. That gives a sense of security and works flawlessly.
