About Verizon

Verizon was founded as Bell Atlantic Corporation by AT&T corporation as one of the seven Baby Bells that were formed after the antitrust trial against AT&T. Originally they were operating in the states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia, and Washington, DC in the United States.

On June 30, 2000, Bell Atlantic acquired GTE and changed its name to Verizon Communications Inc. This was one of the largest mergers in the history of American business. The company was worth more than 52 billion dollars.

Verizon currently has more than 140 million subscribers. After merging with MCI, it has over 250,000 employees.

On June 5, 2013, the British newspaper The Guardian said it had obtained an order from the FBI, approved by the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, calling for Verizon to deliver the metadata of all telephone calls made US National Security Agency (NSA).

In September 2013, Verizon acquired 45% of Verizon Wireless, owned by Vodafone, for 130 000 million, becoming the third-largest corporate transaction signed today. The deal closed on February 21, 2014, gave Verizon exclusive ownership of Verizon Wireless.

On January 22, 2014, The Wall Street Journal reported that Verizon Communications Inc. had received, to date, more than 1,000 requests for information on their subscribers for reasons of “national security” through National security letter (Letters National) Security FBI. In total, Verizon had received in January 2014, 321,545 requests for information from its customers in the federal, state, and local level in the United States.
