Sprint Corporation (formerly Sprint Nextel Corporation) is the fourth largest US mobile operator after Verizon Wireless, AT & T and T-Mobile. The company’s headquarters is located in Overland Park, Kansas.
The company was formed through a merger of Sprint and Nextel. Sprint took over Nextel for 36 billion dollars in 2005. The company Sprint Nextel has attracted about 1.3 million new customers since the merger and thus has more than 45.6 million mobile phone owners as their customers.
Sprint PCS and Nextel use different technologies and frequencies: Sprint PCS is a CDMA2000 network, while Nextel uses the iDEN standard developed by Motorola. Both systems are not compatible with the GSM used in Europe. Customers of Sprint have the opportunity to obtain a SIM card programmed with their phone, which they can use in GSM phones. There are also phones that are both CDMA and iDEN and GSM capable.
Sprint Nextel is currently a sponsor of the NASCAR Sprint Cup, a motor sports league in the United States.
