A modem and a (wireless) router can be two separate devices, but most ISPs deliver modems with integrated (wireless) router.
Router login instructions
With this guide, you will learn how to easily sign in on your router. Before you start, it is important that your computer or laptop is connected to the router, it doesn’t matter whether this is wireless or with a cable.
To get to the router, you need to log in to the web-interface. Usually your router is accessible via the IP address 192.168.1.1. If you don’t know your router’s address, you can retrieve it via the Windows command prompt. In Windows 7: Click the Start button, type command prompt in the search field and click Command Prompt. Windows 8: Tap the home screen, Command Prompt, and then click Command Prompt in the search results. In the command prompt, type ipconfig and then press Enter. The IP address behind Default Gateway is the IP address of your router. This IP address, enter it in your browser and open the login page of your router. Probably you will need to log on to this Web interface.
Have you never changed the password, then find the login information in the manual of your router. It is wise to change the default login credentials for the router after logging in with a chosen username and password. So you prevent another (malicious) remote user changing the settings of your router. This is different for every router.
IP address
All devices in your network communicate via IP addresses. The IP addresses are based on the IP address of your router. In your router, usually you can find it back in the settings for LAN. It is different for each router where this option is. Usually, the address 192.168.1.1 is often chosen for a router. The subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. With this, the first three sets of numbers in your network is fixed and is the fourth of numbers unique to each device on your network. You can thus distribute a maximum of 253 IP addresses on your network and that is usually more than enough for home usage.
