Play iPhone or iPad games on a TV

Gaming on your iPhone or iPad is easy, but you can also use the large screen of the television for it. All you need is a second-generation Apple TV or later.

Stream Games with AirPlay

Sitting in front of a huge TV which is turned off, while you try to play games on the screen of your iPhone, feels like a missed opportunity. Fortunately for us it’s possible to mirror the video and audio from an iOS device with Airplay on a television.

Before you start you should make sure that your iPhone or iPad is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Apple TV that is connected to your TV.

How it works:

  1. Swipe upwards your iDevice to open the Control Panel.
  2. Select AirPlay.
  3. Choose the Apple TV that you want to connect.
  4. Enable the Synchronized option.
  5. Now when you start a game on your iPhone or iPad, it appears as it is right on the screen of your TV, including audio.

Important: Airplay Mirroring can be used with the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, first generation iPad Mini and fifth generation iPod touch, or newer models.

iPhone or iPad as a second screen

If a game supports AirPlay, the screen of your iOS device be used as a second screen. For example, additional functionality can be added to the game. In racing games like Asphalt 7 and Real Racing 3 you get on the iPhone screen a map of the road network. On a television, you can see the game itself. It can be different: there are games where the touchscreen is used as a futuristic joystick. There are other apps that use AirPlay, like Netflix and YouTube.

Multiplayer games on television

Even better is if you can play it on any television with several people. An example is the Party Play option from Real Racing 3. You can play with multiple people at once, but you have to log all on the same network. Each player has its own controller in hand (in the form of an iPhone or iPad) and gets on the TV screen his own racing car.

Make the party complete with a separate controller

If you really want to use Apple TV as a full-fledged game console, then a separate controller is a necessity. It is not necessary because you can also use the iPhone or iPad as a controller. Apps must also support these controllers like GTA Vice City for example.

Looking for a controller for your iOS device? Then check out the SteelSeries Stratus XL or Moga Rebel.

So it’s very easy, but some games make it more fun, by building special options that only work if you connect the iOS device to an Apple TV. Other games incidentally work less good, especially when you need to touch specific places at high speed on the touchscreen. In that case, you are more concerned with the screen of your iDevice then with the large television screen.
