The popular auction site eBay acquired PayPal in October 2002, because about 50% of eBay users already used it. PayPal was thus much more popular than eBay’s own Bill Point. Since the launch of the English version of PayPal, in 2006, the Dutch market shows a strong increase. The number of account holders in the Netherlands grew from 1 million in March 2007 to 2.7 million in March 2010. The company won from 2009 to 2013 five times in a row the Dutch Home Award for the best financial service on the Internet and in Belgium the BeCommerce Award in 2010.
Paying with PayPal is free for the payer, but the receiver pays a certain percentage as commission of 3.4% + € 0.35 from the amount transferred.
