Microsoft lets you stream music for free from OneDrive

The Xbox Music app is now also useful for people who do not subscribe to the music service. The app lets you stream songs that are in a OneDrive library to the Xbox Music app on your iPhone or iPad. Microsoft will also soon rename the name Xbox Music for ‘Groove’, a brand name that Microsoft already has for some longer time. So do not be surprised if soon the app name and the appearance changes.

As long as the songs are in your OneDrive, you can stream them for free to the Xbox Music app. You still need to take out a membership if you want to listen to music you do not own. In that case, you make use of the music library of Xbox Music, and it comes at a price of $9.99 per month. Xbox Music has a library of 40 million songs. Pretty much, if you compare it with other music services.

OneDrive: streaming and saving locally

Besides streaming OneDrive songs, you can also download them on your iDevice to make them available offline. Handy if you also want to listen to an album without using your data bundle.

To put songs into the cloud service OneDrive, you first need a Microsoft account, you can create one on the OneDrive website. Besides that, you must also sign up for Xbox Music.
