iOS9: Everything you need to know

When iOS9 comes out, which features will it have and on what iPhones and iPads will you be able to install it? You can read it all in this post about iOS 9 together with a list of features that we would like to see.

iOS 9 release date

Apple releases a major iOS update annually. IOS9 will be released in 2015, and the chances are that we will see the first details on WWDC 2015. This developer conference always takes place in the summer, usually in June. After the conference the beta version of iOS9 will soon be available for developers. The public release of iOS 9 is expected in September, when Apple releases new iPhones.

Which iPhones and iPads work on iOS 9?

Whenever Apple releases a new version of iOS, a list is published with the iPhones and iPads that will be supported. In comparison, iOS 8 works on the following devices:

  • iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad Air 2
  • 1 iPad mini, iPad Mini 2, iPad Mini 3
  • iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPod touch (fifth generation)

With the arrival of iOS 9, iPhone 4s iPad 2 support could be dropped. New devices are also coming in 2015. We predict that iOS 9 will be suitable for:

  • iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, Air iPad 2, iPad 3 * Air, iPad Pro *
  • iPad Mini 2, iPad 3 mini, iPad Mini 4 *
  • iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s *
  • iPod touch (fifth generation)

Devices with a * have not been announced or confirmed. The naming of these devices may still change.

iOS9 features

At the time of writing it is still unknown what new features in iOS 9 will have. But we can, of course, predict and dream. One of those predictions is that Google will no longer be the default search engine in iOS 9.

There are rumors that iOS9 will not contains many new features. Apple will emphasize on optimization and stability of iOS.

Also, we already saw a nice IOS 9 concept, in which new ideas are developed.

Features we would like to see:

  • Smaller update file so you do not lack storage space when updating iOS
  • Improvements in Apple Maps
  • Homescreen widgets
  • Third-party apps set as default
  • Split multitasking
  • Battery Saving Mode
  • Multiple user accounts
  • Adding apps and settings panel
