The company Hulu was announced in March 2007 with AOL, MSN, MySpace and Yahoo! as “initial distribution partners. Jason Kilar, before Amazon.com was named CEO in June. The name Hulu was elected in late August, when the site came out with an advertisement and not just the content. Hulu is owned jointly by NBC Universal and News Corporation , with financing from Providence Equity Partners , who put $ 100 million of share capital and has a 10% stake.
The name Hulu comes from a Chinese proverb Mandarin, meaning “own precious things”. Literally, it refers (in Chinese) to the Lagenaria siceraria .
In April 2009, after nearly four months of negotiations, Disney bought 27% of Hulu in an attempt to minimize the losses of the crisis affecting the media conglomerate. 11 However, this agreement does not include some successful programs of Disney and ABC.
After this agreement with Disney / ABC, CBS is the only major network not participating in Hulu.
