Google has created a web version of its chat application Hangouts. The variant works full screen in the browser and requires a login with a Google Account. It is the first time that Hangouts is usable on its own site.
Until now, Hangouts was usable within Google+ and Gmail, but never as an independent IM service. The site features chats and contacts with an “inspirational figure” in the background, reportsGoogle employee Jordanna Chord.
Hangouts has been useable since its release as a single app and functioned through a Chrome plugin. Although the site is running on the domain hangouts.google.com, all calls are made via the already existing talkgadget.google.com. This applies to both chats and video calls. The conversations themselves don’t have gotten a new layout and are still in a small window at the bottom right of the screen.
