About BrainPOP
BrainPOP is an educational entertaining website. BrainPOP is both a teaching tool for the classroom and support to the individual and collective work of students. This educational space provides academic support to revise a lesson, prepare an assignment, control or review. The first version was designed by a pediatrician in immunology who wished success to explain difficult concepts to its patients. Since the site quickly took momentum, it is now for the teacher and the student. The site is now certified by institutions such as Yahoo, Forbes or District Administration magazine.
BrainPOP features hundreds of educational videos related to various academic areas, such as science (Biology, Physics, Chemistry), mathematics, technology, history, geography, civics, English, arts and music. The films are presented by two characters: Tim and Moby his robot friend. Customers of this website can deepen their knowledge by watching their adventures.
History
The site was created in 1999 by Dr. Avraham. This researcher pediatrician specializing in immunological diseases had first created the site to explain how the human body works to its young patients. Specifically, he wanted to find a way to teach asthma and allergies. Thus, the site was first created in English for US patients. However, the site was quickly consulted by parents and even teachers of many other countries such as England, Latin America or China. Nowadays, it is also possible to consult the site in French and Spanish.
Reputation
Since 2001, BrainPOP has won multiple awards. In 2001, the site won the Pirelli Internetional Award, the District Administration Best of the Web, Forbes Magazine Best of the Web and FlashForward Film Festival Winner.
In 2002, BrainPOP won for the second year the District AdministrationHomeschool.com ‘Best of the Web Magazine and Forbes Best of the Web. It also received the Eduventures Curriculum Web Site Award, an award it would also receive in 2003.
Teach Canada magazine wrote that the films are presented “in a fun format only suitable for the 21st century student”. BrainPOP movies are ideal for group lessons, to learn about a new subject or to review a concept before an exam.
BrainPOP was partner for events around the preservation of the environment. To do this, the site has published several videos explaining some current problems facing the planet and / or giving courses of action. A video was particularly about water pollution. It explains how the water gets polluted, how water may be polluted and what to do to protect our waters.
